You Are a Terrible Crane

You got a tip that led you to a disused toy crane machine in an old arcade. The machine rasped to life when you plugged in it, then flashed an error code. It looks like you'll have to reset the machine before you can proceed.

Error mode:
• In error mode, the crane does not automatically return to its starting position.
• After every two moves, the crane will pick up or drop off a letter in alternation.
• The crane can only hold one letter at a time.
• When the crane drops a letter, the letters between the pick-up and drop locations are displaced in the direction of the empty pick-up space, shifting one space in reading order across the entire grid.

To reset:
1. Down three, right four, up two, left one.
2. Down one, right two, up one, left four.
3. Down three, right four, left four, right two. You should now see a color in one row of the grid.
4. Down one, left two, up four, down two.
5. Take the first letter of the color from 3, then move to where 2 stopped.
6. Switch the coordinates of 1's drop location, then down one and right three.
7. Left one, right two, then end up where you dropped 1. You should now see a kind of log reading upwards in a column.
8. Switch the last coordinates but go one more down, then down one more and right two.
9. Up one, left one, up one, right one.
10. Switch the coordinates of 4's pickup location, then go to the drop off coordinates of 6.
11. Take the last letter of the log from 7, then go down two, up three. You should now see a zodiac sign in the top row with its head on backwards.
12. Start at the pickup coordinates of 2, then go to the drop coordinates of 10.
13. Down one, right one, then back to the first drop.
14. Use the pickup coordinates of 8, then go back to the drop of 2. The fully reset grid should show an appropriate word. You may submit this word in the answer form to check your progress.

After resetting the crane, something drops from the ceiling of the machine into the chute. You retrieve some cryptic instructions, with a handwritten note scrawled on top:
